Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, my students start the class with a warm-up question, we review homework, then learn new material. We take notes first and then we get the opportunity to practice the new content on whiteboards where the students discuss and collaborate. They become personal teachers.

My students come from the Personalized Learning Community at my school and love to work together.

They are energized middle school students who like to learn. They love helping each other and their teachers. Within this community, students take walks to the beach three miles away to conduct experiments, research and beach clean-ups.

My Project

Through whiteboard practice problems, students work through problems and compare with each other using the dry erase markers requested. The class gets noisy with the arguments about who is correct and why, but it is good noise. Once complete, students raise their boards to show the answer. One student is then chosen to guide me through the process. All students have their own board and markers dry out fast, thus we need to be well supplied with markers and erasers to continue with our practices. We also need to be up-to-date with our materials, so having Common Core practice books will challenge us with new material and prepare us for state testing. We can also answer the Common Core Workbook questions in groups, so paper is a must..

Students find Math boring and challenging, whiteboards have enlightened my students and is an activity students enjoy each day.

The first questions asked is "are we doing whiteboards today?" I hope to say "yes" everyday they step through my doors and for them to remain enthusiastic about Math all year long.
