Help me give my students a calm environment that will allow them to enjoy being engaged learners in my classroom. I'm requesting an essential oil diffuser, markers, and coloring pencils.
My school district has a very diverse student body in regards to both ethnicity and economic class. A large percentage of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Some of the backgrounds and home lives my students have would break your heart, but they are strong individuals and show up to school trying their best. Many of my students struggle with having their basic needs met, yet are supportive of each other and show me that there are no limits to the inspiration and motivation they give each other.
My Project
When my students come to school I want to help them leave their struggles behind them and create a calm environment that allows them to be fully engaged in their learning. Current examples of how I see my students not engaged in their learning include frequent absences, tardiness to class, and not being an active participant in the classroom. I want my classroom to be a calm location that students want to be in (on time) and also give them a safe place where they can participate in their learning and dare to be wrong. I am requesting an essential oil diffuser to help create the soothing environment that I think will maximize engagement. As the essential oils are diffused throughout the room they are detected by the students' olfactory system which then interacts with the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system is associated with emotion and memory- this is why certain scents can cause us to recall particular memories.
I am also asking for a supply of markers and colored pencils to use as instructional materials.
Many students find coloring to be a soothing activity and can also being useful for the people who are visual learners. The new NGSS curriculum incorporates lots of modeling of concepts, so students do a lot of drawing. I have also used drawing/coloring to introduce students to the structure of DNA, identify particular cell parts, and draw food webs. Please help me make my classroom a calm environment for my students to be engaged in.
