My honors and college preparatory chemistry students are awesome. These kids are hardworking, respectful and will put in the effort needed to achieve results. These kids are so well behaved it is a pleasure to go to class and teach them every day. Also, they ask numerous questions to try to relate the ideas we are covering with their prior knowledge. Many kids come before school for help, several arriving between 6 and 6:40AM. It is not uncommon for me to have at least 10 kids in my classroom for help before school. Many try so hard to fully grasp these complex concepts.
These kids work so well together, and it is wonderful to see this collaboration when they do their labs or work on problems in class.
The weaker students naturally pair up with stronger students which helps both. The stronger students must articulate their logic and understanding when explaining how to solve problems or theoretical concepts. And the weaker students benefit from their peers explaining concepts in a way they may be more likely to understand.
My Project
These laptops already have a home and main use designed for them. There are numerous computer laboratory simulations (over 15 and counting!) that I would like to incorporate into our classroom instruction. These simulations illustrate the abstract concepts of chemistry. It would be wonderful to be able to run these chemical simulations in our classroom. Our school has a few Chromebooks; unfortunately, these chemistry lab simulations will not run on a Chromebook or tablet.
As computers are so useful, their use will not be limited chemistry lab simulations, they will also be used for data analysis, graphing, interfacing with probes for wet chemistry lab work and to access additional online learning resources.
Students will be challenged and presented with new ways of approaching the material with the introduction of these computers into the classroom. Although these computers only run Microsoft S version, Microsoft offers the free upgrade from this version so the students will have the full power of Excel, Word and PowerPoint with these computers.
The school is sorely under maintained. At present, we have no working gas lines for the classroom, in addition to the malfunctioning HVAC system and leaking roof. As such the superintendent has recommended relocating the school for the next several years to an office building. It would be difficult to reinforce the chemistry concepts without the use of wet chemistry lab space. This is why the use of computer simulations would become so necessary.
