My Students

As a special education teacher in a low income school district my students face many challenges in the classroom as well as outside. My students come from a variety of countries, backgrounds, and upbringings. They also have many different academic and social needs. A vast majority of them fall well below the poverty line and as a result our entire building receives free school lunch.

It is so important that these high risk students have the necessary materials in order to be just as successful as their suburban peers.

All too often students in the inner city do not have the same opportunities that others in the suburbs are given and the gap between them continues to grow.

My Project

As a special education teacher, it is vital that I am able to remain organized and to also teach my students to remain organized. Almost daily I struggle because they do not bring the necessary materials to class.

Monthly, I am given one ream of paper, and five pencils or pens, when they are available; this makes it nearly impossible for my classroom to function without providing these things on my own.

By giving my students basic materials, like pens, pencils, folders, and paper, we are able to provide them with basic necessities that all students need to be successful.
