Just-Right Tables: First Graders in Need of Child-Size Tables

Help me give my students tables that "fit" them and empower them to learn.

My Students

Diverse, curious, and fun are adjectives that describe my first graders who show up to school wanting to learn and play. My first grade students attend a neighborhood school in the southeast corner of San Francisco. They are a diverse group of learners with many cultural assets. For example, many of my first graders are children of immigrants. That means that they bring diverse perspectives on living, learning, and being in the world. Furthermore, they speak different languages at home, such as Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Urdu. This collision of diverse language and culture is the genesis for creative thinking and innovation.

My students are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, activists, artists, and explorers.

My students are curious and courageous.

This class of first graders has had their education disrupted by a global pandemic. They were in Pre-K when the pandemic started, and they attended kindergarten online. Now that we are back in-person, I would like to offer my students a great in-person learning experience and that starts with a welcoming learning environment.

My Project

Students no longer sit in rows facing the teacher because that sends the message that the teacher is the holder of knowledge. Instead, students sit in table groups so that they can work and learn together. When students sit in groups, that communicates that they can construct knowledge. That is, students can talk and listen to others. Students can share their ides and build on the ideas of others. Furthermore, students can form friendships and build relationships when they sit in groups, and students learn more when they have secure relationships in the classroom.

Tables that "fit" children are an essential item in early childhood classrooms, and that is why I would like to replace the old and dirty desks in my classroom with new round tables.

Currently, the desks in the classroom are SO old, and there are a few desks that are too big for the first graders. My heart breaks when I see a first grader unable to sit comfortably at a table to read and write. My students can't sit correctly to practice handwriting!

With these new tables, my students will feel secure while learning new things. Thank you for your consideration of this project.
