They had been eagerly hoping for a class pet hamster, writing opinion pieces and researching how to take care of hamster. After several obstacles in acquiring our hamster friend (logistics working with administration, then schools were closed for a week due to a strike), we finally welcomed Snowball the Second into our classroom in March. Still, although we only had Snowball for a few months, students had a great experience taking care of and bonding with him. They took turns feeding and cleaning his habitat. They observed his behaviors and tested out hypotheses of which toys/food were his favorites. They settled down after recess to just watch Snowball sleep in his burrows. \r\n\r\nWe just wrapped up the school year, and one student took Snowball home to take care of during the summer, her first pet ever!
