Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves a diverse group of students. My students work hard and they are eager to learn and grow. While this is true of most classrooms, we have recently been joined by multiple students displaced from their home countries in Central and South America. Our school also caters to the greater Baltimore area, with scholars traveling to our school from all over the city. In my class I like to emphasize reading for fun but also reading to develop life skills.

Systemic racism directly and indirectly effects these scholars on a daily basis but we are not always given the materials to have these conversations.

This has inspired seek out an extra tools to have an inclusive discussion on the justice system and race.

My Project

Just Mercy is a book which focuses on the justice system from the perspective of two African-American men, One who is on trial and the other who is trying to save him. Over the years teaching 9th grade, scholars have been introduced to To Kill a Mocking Bird, which does not bring light to many the the social and racial injustice of the justice system as this Just Mercy does.

I am requesting copies of Just Mercy for each of my students.

Scholars need a book that can reflect their own experiences with the justice system as well as open up the space to have these serious conversations.

In my class, we will use Just Mercy as an anchor text as we dive into out conversations about the justice system and where we stand as people of color in this system.
