Some of my students are learning to acquire the English language. They are students whose first language is not English. I teach approximately twenty first grade students. There are some non-English speakers whose first language is Spanish, French, or Bulgarian. My students are learning not only to speak, listen, read, and write in English, but all aspects of American culture. They are doing this while maintaining their own language and culture--we ensure it is alive, thriving, and represented. Valuing what they bring to me is a very important part of our diverse and inclusive classroom community. My students are the most amazing, eager, loving students one could ask for. They are willing and ready to learn, each and every day!
My Project
The use of hands-on math centers allows for me to maximize interventions and further individualized guided practice all the while knowing exactly what my students are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to develop and enhance their language, mathematical computation and problem solving skills. By having this ‘Fun in a Bucket’ set, my students will be able to increase their joy of learning math as well as develop and refine their use of social and academic English.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase students’ math skills and use of academic English language, you will ultimately help to increase academic achievement.
Students will be able to direct their attention towards fun, enjoyable academic learning and not whether they are getting something right or wrong. In a just world, these hands-on activities will increase students’ desire to learn, building their confidence while honing in on math and English language skills.
