Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a loving group of children. They require more support and encouragement than the average student. I teach k-3 Access Points at Forest Hills Elementary. My K-1 students are pre-academic and require hands-on materials to learn. They would greatly benefit from using Ipads in the classroom. They thrive on short, highly engaging activities, and an iPad station would be a great way to focus on math and reading skills. My older students, 2nd grade - 3rd grade, are learning their foundational skills. They all come to class excited to learn and be loved by the adults in the classroom. I have a highly structured classroom with 7-10 minute academic centers with a break after 3 rounds of centers. They all have sensory and social skills needs that could also be addressed with pads.
My Project
My students have sensory needs that need to be addressed daily. My high-energy students need high sensory input like trampoline time, and my unfocused students need focused sensory activities like kinetic sand. When they have their sensory needs met, they are ready to learn in a classroom environment. Autistic individuals often have trouble processing their senses. They can feel a range of overstimulation of their senses to hardly any sensations. They can have very diverse sensory needs. These different products can greatly improve their capacity to function in the classroom and make academic gains throughout the year.
Can you imagine feeling so energized and excited that all you can think about is jumping and running as fast as you can?
That is how my energized students feel when they enter the classroom. When I give them a few minutes of high-impact exercise like the trampoline, I can bring them to a less energized state and ready to learn how to read. Can you imagine feeling scared and anxious because you are so overwhelmed by interacting with others? My unfocused students feel this way all the time, so we give them a sensory activity that helps them focus on one thing and bring them to a state that is ready to start their day in the classroom, ready to learn.
