“Jambo Means Hello!” Prekindergarten Books in Swahili & English

Help me give my students from Africa bilingual pre-K books in two languages~ Swahili and English!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our vibrant pre-K and kindergarten classroom, the introduction of bilingual Swahili-English picture books represents a significant stride towards inclusive education. These books are not merely educational resources; they are powerful instruments of cultural affirmation and linguistic pride for our students born in Uganda and Nigeria.

By incorporating these bilingual books into our English as a Second Language curriculum, we offer our young learners a taste of home, ensuring their African cultural roots are acknowledged and celebrated.

This familiarity fosters a nurturing learning environment, crucial for their emotional and social development. As they flip through the pages, filled with vibrant illustrations and tales from their native lands, they strengthen their connection to their heritage while simultaneously developing English language skills: ABC books, 123 books, and simple beginner stories.

Moreover, these books serve as an invaluable tool for promoting literacy in a way that resonates with their identities. Learning to read and count through stories and characters that reflect their backgrounds boosts confidence and academic engagement. Embracing multilingualism at this tender age also lays the groundwork for cognitive benefits like enhanced problem-solving skills and creativity.

Your generous support will not only elevate our literacy program but also send a powerful message about the importance of cultural diversity and linguistic equity in education. It will ensure that every child in our classroom feels seen, valued, and motivated to learn, creating a foundation for lifelong learning and appreciation of diverse cultures. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to creating an equitable educational space where every child can thrive, regardless of their background. With your help, we can turn these aspirations into reality, one book at a time.
