iTuning towards Improved Literacy and COLLEGE Readiness!!

Nashville, TN Grades 9-12

My school is an urban comprehensive high school that is comprised of over 80% minority students with a Free and Reduced Lunch percentage of 97%. This means that 97% of my students cannot afford breakfast or lunch, let alone school supplies or some of the other essential items most schools have readily available- like instructional resources and technology. However, a lack of resources does not stop my students! They are all focused on learning and ready to go to college! I teach a variety of students- from co-teaching sophomores in an inclusive setting to AP English Language (11th Grade), and AP English Literature (12th Grade.) My educational philosophy is borrowed from Malcolm X- By Any Means Necessary! My students might be impoverished by government and societal standards, but we will do anything it takes to get them out of intergenerational poverty, into college, and on their way towards fulfilling their dreams.

Many scholars and educators have talked endlessly about the achievement gap of urban minority students; however, it's truly a RESOURCE GAP. My students do not have access to technology, textbooks, informational media, or any other resource that could maximize their learning and increase their chances for success in the modern world. Things that most persons take for granted are a luxury for my students. I teach about 180 10th, 11th, and 12th graders each year, and they are thirsting for knowledge and for links to the outside world. One project- fully funded- will help bridge this gap for over 180 students a year.

Poverty might isolate them in many aspects, but technology, and especially podcasts and iTunesU, will help them connect with the outside world. If you are curious, go to iTunesU and explore the different discussion topics from universities all over the country. Imagine my students listening to the same lecture as a student from an Ivy League school; imagine the impact that experience can have on a young mind. Also, many of my students are interested in audio recording and broadcasting. With the class set of iPods, we can create podcasts that are both informational and that help with college readiness- test taking skills, news broadcasts, current events, music snippets, and ACT/SAT questions of the day. These iPods appeal to both auditory and kinesthetic learners because students will be listening, taking notes, designing podcasts, and ultimately be designing their own learning.

Please, please, give me the opportunity to help expose my students to a digital world full of knowledge and new information. Help me get them ready for college by subscribing to educational podcasts and teaching them to take effective notes while listening to an informational lecture off of a specific podcast or from a university professor on iTunesU. We talk so much about closing this achievement- resource- gap, so this is a great opportunity for YOU to actually make a tremendous difference in the life of a deserving student. As a teacher, I cannot afford to purchase these essential technological tools myself, so I am placing my faith in the generosity of my donors and am crossing my fingers. Having these iPods in the classroom will make a world of difference in promoting literacy, getting my students ready for college, and empowering them to become life-long learners. Thank you for your consideration! :)
