My school is an urban comprehensive high school that is comprised of over 80% minority students with a Free and Reduced Lunch percentage of 71%. This means that 71% of my students cannot afford breakfast or lunch, let alone school supplies or some of the other essential items most schools have readily available- like instructional resources and technology. However, a lack of resources does not stop my students! They are all focused on learning and ready to go to college! I teach a variety of students- from co-teaching sophomores in an inclusive setting to AP English Language (11th Grade), and AP English Literature (12th Grade.) My educational philosophy is borrowed from Malcolm X- By Any Means Necessary! My students might be impoverished by government and societal standards, but we will do anything it takes to get them out of intergenerational poverty, into college, and on their way towards fulfilling their dreams.
