Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are vibrant, curious, and motivated immigrants from all over the world; they have recently moved to the city of Boston and are in the process of learning English, so they can communicate their thoughts, passions, and ideas with more people here in the United States. In my class, we focus on developing their English language skills so that they can succeed academically, socially, and professionally.
A key part of learning is feeling safe and comfortable in the classroom, so we work intentionally to create community and comfort in our learning space.
My students come from not only a variety of countries and cultures, but they also represent a diversity of learning experiences and English language levels. Building community allows us to learn academically and from each other in inspiring and effective ways!
My Project
My school does not use pre-determined textbook learning. Instead language resources, texts, writing assignments, and the rest are influenced by the learning and interests of the students in the class. Students organize and reflect back on their learning from the year by maintaining interactive notebooks that include reference and vocabulary sheets from each unit and their own written reflections. Reference pages are printed on various colors to allow for easy recall when looking for a resource. Texts are stored in folders for easy access as we move onto new units.
The notebooks and folders students create become textbooks of their own design - one that they can keep with them for reference as they move forward in years to come.
