My class is an English language class for speakers of other languages. In class, we focus on teaching all elements of the English language. However, teaching computer literacy is also a major element of my class, especially since the vast majority of my students come from low income immigrant families that have not had regular and easy access to technology. The Chromebooks I am asking for in this project will allow my students to strengthen their literacy skills in both the English language and the language of technology. An important part of our class routine is developing reading stamina and the ability to read in English independently. Many of my students struggle with reading independently due to their beginning level of English, however reading ebooks on Chromebooks will allow them to listen to their texts as they read and to interact with the texts in order to increase their comprehension. Many students have had success using the Read & Write Chrome extension, as well as listening to audio books on Tumblebooks, however using shared technology within the school means that these students are not guaranteed access to these supports everyday. Having Chromebooks in the classroom will also allow them to become more familiar and efficient with technology as they write and share their own pieces of original literature with me and their peers through Google Docs and Google Classroom. Regular use of these programs, allow them to give and receive more immediate feedback as they continue the process of developing themselves as writers and readers.
