It's Important to See the Value of Education - Literally

My students need a LCD projector.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students in my school need to be able to see the importance of reading and writing - sometimes literally, unfortunately.

Living in one of the poorest congressional districts in America, my students often have problems seeing to the front of the room, where directions, examples, supplemental materials, and exciting hooks are often located.

This is only one of the reasons that an LCD projector would help my 8th grade English Language Arts students. Simply presenting the material in a more visible fashion would give students the ability to overcome this serious hurdle. Besides this simple practicality, it will allow students to see technology integrated into the classroom more directly - the Internet projected on the wall, powerpoints for group presentations (which will be a great asset for late high school and college), and the inclusion of the visual aids that are so central to my largely-immigrant population. After all, if you were trying to learn a subject in another language, some accompanying pictures might be nice, right? Perhaps the most important thing an LCD projector would make possible would be the ability to put exemplary student work up in front of the class. Using a scanner I've brought in from home, I could quickly put student drafts up in front of their peers so that students could see exactly what good writing looks like at their own level. This would be way more useful than a teacher-generated example; it also would be a great way to celebrate the especially bright students in class.

So, you wouldn't only be allowing students to see better (which would be reason enough, I think), but also to get a bit of technological know-how early on and to use each other as resources for learning. In an educational situation where technology is unfortunately scarce and peer-to-peer empowerment is hard to come by, this one thing would go a long way to helping students master the English language and succeed further as developing citizens and learners.
