This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Most of my students come from a low economical background. As a result, they receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Most of them live in a single parent house whole, where they are cared for by their mothers. Therefore, they spend a lot of time at their grandparents, their uncle(s) or their aunt(s) houses because those are the individuals who take care of them while their mother is at work.
They school is in bed in a low income area where most individuals are renters.
My Project
In Kindergarten, all of our whole group learning take place on our rug. Our Dear time (morning readings), openings, mini lessons, and closings.
At this age, students are still learning about personal space and they are still territorial.
Therefore, it is necessary to have a rug larger enough to accommodate 24 students, so they are not sitting too close to or on top of one another. That ways, daily instruction can continue with limited interruptions and outbursts about he or she is in my space, he or she is too close to me and/or he or she is touching me.
