Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We're completely biased, but we believe we have the best students around! Five years ago (after COVID), our school's math proficiency was 28th out of 31 schools in our district. Today, we are number 1 and our 3rd grade math proficiency is one of the highest in the state!!! How did we get here? It's a reflex!

Reflex is a personalized math program that is designed to master addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts quickly and with automaticity!

Students work on the program for three days a week for 15 minutes to earn their "green light." The program includes game-like activities that focus on the skills teachers have assigned to students as well as their personal progress. Between our 2nd-5th grades, students have solved over 4 million facts this year alone, with an average fluency gain of 137 facts per student!

While having automaticity is important, we believe this has helped our students because it allows them to "free up" their cognitive load while solving more complex word problems and algorithms in the upper grades. Instead of having to spend time thinking about what 7x8 is, students can dig into the problem to identify the operation and then quickly solve it. This has allowed our students to solve more problems and increase their proficiency because of additional targeted practice. A true game changer for our school, students, teachers, and families!
