Books can be printed, shared, projected, and imported through other platforms such as Google slides and Kami. The texts focus on increasing content area exposure, building background knowledge, and developing strong foundational skills like decoding and phonics.\r\n\r\nWe are so grateful for your generosity to fund these incredible programs! We have already been using them for about a month now and will continue to use them over the summer and next year. As you read in our proposal, when we came to our school in the fall of 2021, it was ranked last in our district (and close to last in the state) for student growth, or the measure of how much students learn in a year. The school had even been considered for state takeover due to its historical performance.\r\n\r\nIn just four years, our school has gone from almost last in many measures to number 1 in math for the entire county AND 6th overall in reading, math, and science composite proficiency. No one would have believed this was possible, except for maybe our teachers and our kids. We knew what they could do!\r\n\r\nWe are so excited to set up this treat bar for our students to celebrate their incredible work on their EOGs (and this entire year!). First grade and fifth grade classes have been learning about the life cycle of seeds together. We have been reading books together about plants and gardens to prepare for trying to grow some vegetables from seeds.\r\n\r\nThanks to generous donors like you, we have seeds, pots and watering cans to get us started. Students began by placing seeds in damp paper towels and then placing them into small plastic bags which were hung on our windows. The excitement on students faces when they began to see sprouts growing was priceless. The following week they planted the seeds in large pots and watered them. We are hoping that they will continue to grow before the end of the school year. This is just the beginning of this project, but I wanted to share some photos with you so you could see that we have been able to get started and we are looking forward to growing out potted garden in our school courtyard! My students gathered around it with wide eyes, taking turns playing and listening to the deep, resonant tone fill our classroom. For many of them, this was their first encounter with a pitched percussion instrument of this size, . In a school where resources are limited, something as simple as a new instrument is very exciting and provides wonderful opportunities for exploration. \r\n\r\nThe bass bar has been used across grade levels. It is a great tool for lower grade levels o reinforce steady beat. Just the other day, Kindergarten was working on differentiating between rhythm and beat. Students took turns playing the steady beat on the bass bar why the rest of the students clapped the rhythm. The powerful tone and resonance helps to reinforces this concept. The bass bar has also been a wonderful way to add more texture to our ensemble. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are building toward creating more pieces as an Orff ensemble. I would love to acquire another bass bar so students can create the foundation of a chord by playing an ostinato as we add the other layers of instruments above. The opportunities are endless!
