My Project

I teach at a small school on the Waianae Coast of Oahu. Many children need to drive to the town over to play team sports like soccer, baseball, and other community sports, unless families have the funds to pay for club sports. My school unfortunately doesn't have a PE teacher. It is up to us teachers to teach physical fitness.

I want to use ball sports in my STEAM class as a way to teach complex thinking and problem solving skills while also teaching the basic skills of ball sports.

During the first quarter of my class, many of my lessons center around collaboration, complex thinking and problem solving. I'd love to use PE as a way to teach STEM fundamentals with relay races, passing, kicking, shooting drills and more. For example, after learning how to shoot baskets or kicking goals, students can brainstorm, plan, and build in groups, a device that can increase accuracy to score points. Then, test and improve while taking data. The pool noodles will be used during the engineering design process as students create products for efficiency or accuracy. While not directly related to an individual sport, they will be used to see if their product improved overall performance!

Not only will my students get out and get physical, they'll learn to work with other students while also working on their engineering design skills.
