My students need a classroom set of basic four function Sharp calculators to assist with work in class. I am also asking for a wall organizer for them.
I teach in a rural middle school in Eastern Oklahoma. My students are in the 7th and 8th grade and have a very diverse background. I have a select group of students who excel in math, but a large portion of students I see have a history of not liking math and struggle with it. It is my job to find a way for them to enjoy math and not be afraid of it.
Most students are not able to receive extra help from their parents because they may struggle with math as well or work a job that interferes with being available to help them when they are home.
My Project
Students often face fear when it comes to math. Most students do not receive encouragement in math from their parents or guardians who may also struggle in the area of math. I have a deep passion to help students grow to love math and not be afraid of it.
I am asking for a classroom set of basic four-function Sharp calculators.
My students will be using these calculators when solving problems that are focused on teaching concepts rather than teaching how to type it in the calculator.
I teach 7th and 8th grade math. Students should know how to calculate already, but the reality is that not all do. I address this throughout the year at different times. Students understand the new concepts being taught but struggle with basic calculations.
I am also asking for a numbered wall organizer to store the calculators. Students will be assigned a particular number and will be required to use the same number each time they come to class. This will help keep track of the calculators and require the students to be responsible and return them to the correct location.
With the ability to use a calculator as a tool to help assist with certain calculations my students will be able to feel just as successful as those who are able to calculate quickly.
