My students will be using the calculators when solving problems that are focused on teaching concepts rather than teaching how to type it in the calculator. I teach 7th and 8th grade math. Students should know how to calculate already, but the reality is that not all do. I address this throughout the year at different times. Students understand the new concepts being taught, but struggle with basic calculations. With the ability to use a calculator as a tool to help assist with certain calculations these students are able to feel just as successful as those who are able to calculate quickly.
