Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Few of our kids know that they carry around with them an incredible learning device. We can change that! I teach in a low-income, high-minority middle school in Southern California. It is a very unique area where many of our kids still do not have access to computers at home. I teach 7th grade Social Studies and my classroom is very media heavy. Our kids often come to us with little to no history background from elementary school and I work hard to make their first experience with history an exciting one.

The problem with this is if students miss a presentation it can be very hard to make up. I have turned all my presentations into YouTube videos but few students can access them. Those that do have computers at home often do not have high-speed Internet access (or any at all) and YouTube is blocked by our district network for school computers. So, while I have been able to get the videos online, few of my students have been able to use them. Additionally, our school has gone to a "No electronics" policy this year for students but I want to still be able to provide learning opportunities using these devices. Students are easily "wowed" and if I can show them learning applications on an iPod in class I'm confident they'll run home to continue with them!

So, I have two specific uses for the device. First, I will set up an iPod station where students who missed lectures can go and plug in either before or after school get the notes. This will also, of course, be available to students who need more review. Instead of being forced to keep pace with the class they will be able to work at a speed of their choice. Secondly, from time to time, I will use the iPod in class to show educational Apps the students might use. I have tried to do this already with my Nintendo DS but, unlike the iPod, it does not have a video-out port. I am stuck showing one kid at a time. The iPod Touch is built perfectly for a classroom environment in this respect. I cannot wait to use one in this way.

This device will not sit in a desk begging to be used. I use technology in my classroom on an almost daily basis even with our school's limitations. The only computer in my classroom is a 750mhz PC from 2005 (or is it 2003...?) and I've pushed it about to its limits. Adding one single iPod Touch to this set up will give my students access to a whole new range of technology and applications. You can help me show them that they have access to an incredible learning device on them almost all the time. We all talk about creating life-long learners; we ought to start with the tools they already have!
