I have 24 students from many corners of the world in my classroom in the foothills of Salt Lake City. My students are 5 and 6 years old. Our classroom has a strong community despite not all students living in the local neighborhood. Many are bused from local university housing. Within my classroom, I have a wide range of abilities. Some of my students do not know their letter names and sounds, while others are reading far above grade level. It is a challenge to meet their individual needs. To address this I use whole group, small group, and individual supports. I use a variety of engagement strategies for my active students. Some of my students do not have access to technology outside of the school setting. My students love school and love to learn. Specifically, my students are very proud of the work that they do and take any opportunity to share it with their peers, teachers, and parents. Any support that I receive will greatly add to their engagement and enjoyment of learning.
My Project
Our school uses a literacy program called Daily 5 where students focus on reading, writing, and listening during a hour block each day. Research shows that students need a systematic and individualized approach to learning which Daily 5 provides. During this block, students receive small group, whole group, and individualized instruction.
Having iPads available to my students will allow them to access individualized literacy instruction during Daily 5.
We will use Lexia which automatically individualizes instruction based on each students needs. Please help students to have access to this technology in order to use our literacy block in the most effective way!
