The materials I have chosen for my kindergartners are materials that will help them actively engage in learning literacy. I know that students who are successful readers are generally more confident and do better in school. Students who are successful in school are typically more successful in life after school. I want my students to have options and choices during my literacy centers so that they are excited to learn in a way that supports their individual learning styles. When young students have the opportunity for hands on experiences it helps them retain their knowledge of letters and sounds. I believe having individual whiteboards and letter sets will help my students engage in building words, recognizing letters and letter sounds, and simply making connections between instruction and application. I have selected many read aloud books to teach my students different skills and to supplement and incoporate them into the existing curriculum. My students love being read to and I can see their excitement for reading grow as I read them new books! I have selected several books on CD so that students may choose to listen and follow along independently during literacy centers! Additionally, I have several students that need some support in learning to sit in an academic setting. This is why I have selected several options for seating. I also have several very young kindergartners needing support with holding a pencil correctly to shape a strong foundation for their young writing careers which is why I have selected several different pencil grips to give them choice. Part of my job as a kindergarten teacher is to instill a love for learning and I feel that developing these centers will help me accomplish my job. Thank you for your consideration!
