Bonjour à tous, my third graders spend most of their day learning subjects in a French-immersion classroom (a small portion of the day includes English instruction). There are 24 children, ages 8-9, and they love learning! They have all been in a French curriculum school for several years.
Our school is a French-immersion & French-curriculum public charter school serving all of Louisiana.
Our students learn all subjects, except English, in the French language and under the guidance of certified French teachers. Our school emphasizes learning outside of the classroom—students explore science, art & history through classroom immersions at Audubon Zoo & Aquarium, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, & the French Quarter parks & museums.
Our school is growing by adding a grade each year & will eventually be a PK-12 school, making Lycée the only French high school in Louisiana. Students will finish high school with both an American diploma & a French Baccalaureate. We are an open-access public school, no testing to our early entrants in PK4 and Kindergarten. We have a rapidly growing population of at-risk students, currently at 50.1% with a goal of 67% school wide. In addition to the day-to-day curriculum, 25% of our student body has been identified to have learning disabilities.
My Project
The iPads will allow students to work in groups and independently of the teacher. I especially want to use them for differentiation in math lessons. As with any school, my students are at different levels in their subjects and need varying amounts of assistance. There are now math apps available in French and English so that immersion education will not need to be interrupted. Technology will allow me to access a variety of apps and sites that can reach students with different learning styles.
The economic disparity in our student population highlights the need for available technology as some of our students do not have Internet access at home. Our school offers students two software programs at home to support day to day classroom learning. These programs are essential for the success of all our students. Currently some of our students are not able to access these tools at home and with the purchase of new iPads for our classroom all students will be able to access these tools.
Each student would be able to gain something valuable in their education through the use of iPads in our classroom.
Using specific programs and apps allow students that are meeting or exceeding their curriculum expectations to work independently at their own pace and learning level, while I assist students who need support. Students without technology at home will be granted access at school. Students with learning disabilities will have access to tools to help bridge their learning pathway.
