I have 27 eager and energetic 3rd-grade students who enjoy working collaboratively in partnerships and enjoy moving around the classroom. They frequently engage in critical thinking. Third graders thrive on movement throughout the day inside and outside of the classroom to keep their brains refreshed! The school I work in consists of K-5 elementary students. We are a national Blue Ribbon School and take part in the Green School initiative. Our school is a Culture of Thinking school that takes part in many critical thinking activities.
My Project
While working with small groups, the iPad will be used to engage students in intervention and extension activities based on the student needs. The students will be able to use the sit/standing desk to hold the iPad and noise canceling headphones to block out sound. Our school has a subscription to a website based reading program that the students will be able to access using the iPad. During small groups, students will be able to practice reading and spelling high-frequency words and building fluency while using the iPad. Students will be able to use the iPad to use speech to text for writing during Writer's workshop as well as a dictionary app to find unknown words. During math workshop, the iPad can be used for addition/subtraction and multiplication/division fact practice or for small group problem-solving activities.
When this project is funded I will be able to organize and gather information on each student and utilize this to develop individualized instruction, small strategy groups and continually monitor student growth.
The iPad will be used by students based on need and interest and it will allow me to make data-driven decisions to create assessments, lessons, and share ideas with other teachers. The iPad will be a great addition to our classroom community and learning environment. Since the Ipad will be used as an intervention for some of my struggling students, the noise canceling headphones will also help lessen distraction as well as the ability to stand or sit with the desk. The balance board can be used between intervention use.
