Introduce Photojournalism to Budding Journalists

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about photography and photojournalism by providing digital cameras for our student newspaper.

My Students

I teach 6th grade English and Social Studies. The students in my classroom are extremely diverse in terms of learning needs, emotional needs, and socioeconomic background. My students love to use technology, read, and collaborate with each other.

I firmly believe that my students' learning opportunities should not be limited by their zip code.

They deserve to learn through hands-on activities, engaging curriculum, and opportunities for creative expression and I strive to provide these experiences for them.

In addition to my teaching duties, I coach my school's Speech and Debate Team and sponsor my school's Newspaper Club. These expanded learning opportunities give students the chance to develop important skills in communication, teamwork, literacy, writing, and creative expression. Supporting these students during out-of-school time is one of the highlights of my teaching career!

My Project

During the 2020-2021 school year, our Elementary school started a student newspaper. Since we only had 3 months in school, we mostly focused on writing and creating, which students excelled at. This year, I would like to expand the learning of my budding journalists and give them more opportunities to be creative by providing the Newspaper Club with digital cameras.

By funding the cameras in this project, you will help me increase opportunities for students voice and expression - after all, they say "a picture is worth a thousand words."
Students will be able to brainstorm ways to support their writing with photography and take additional ownership of our school's student newspaper.
This expanded opportunity for learning and creativity will give my students a learning experience that they otherwise might not ever experience and could help unlock new passions and career paths in the future. Help me change my students' lives through photojournalism!
