This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At nine years old, my fourth grade students are excited to learn just about anything. The trouble is connecting their interests and natural curiosity to a book that matches their reading level. After I began teaching, I quickly realized that the books I had in my classroom were inaccessible to most of my students. Many of my them are 1-4 grade levels below the state reading standard, which means I have some students reading at a kindergarten level.

Despite their varying capabilities, all of my students have fourth-grade interests.

But as of now, the only books in my classroom that are accessible to my lowest readers are clearly written for much younger audiences. These students experience particular anxiety during independent reading time when their choices are either to struggle through an overly difficult book or select a book their classmates might perceive as babyish. Both options sink their confidence as readers. The importance of a diverse and expansive classroom library is amplified by the fact that my school does not have a functioning library, so the only books that my students can access are the ones I obtain on my own.

Recently, I've been fascinated by the science of reading and how it can help my struggling readers. In order to grow as readers, my students need access to high-quality, high-interest decodable books. A decodable book—one that a student can read without teacher support— not only provides foundational reading practice but also has the power to give a child the knowledge and confidence that they are a reader. When a student is engaged in a topic, they are more likely to persevere through a challenging text. I hope to expand my classroom library, so all my students can find a book that matches their interests and their reading levels.
