As boxes of books arrived we would open one a day and look at the new series or genre that was purchased. The last thirty minutes of our class is spent reading independently while I pull some of our struggling readers for additional skill work. This is sometimes hard to manage and difficult to make students accountable for their independent time. However, having the new books really changed that. \r\n\r\nAs students tried a new book they were engaged, they would often share or show it to a friend who would read it next. A group of boys decided that they would finish all the Investigator books by the end of the year. They even wrote a list of who would pass a book to who when they were finished. \r\n\r\nOver the years I noticed that most of my male students really prefer non-fiction. I had also noticed an interest in \"The I survived ..\"book series but few of my students could access it. The quality and interest of nonfiction books over the last decade has increased drastically so I was thrilled to be able to purchase the \"Who was \" series and \"What was ..\"( disaster) series. These are much more accessible in language and sentence structure for beginner third grade readers. Josiah, a student, who rarely read anything beyond picture books and early readers was obsessed\r\nwith tackling these chapter books and finished several. I know people say don't judge a book by its cover but kids do-- having the new, fresh series with updated graphics drew my students in.
