Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Writing for elementary students today has far surpassed the simple essays and book reports done in years past. Considering the TCAP Writing Assessment that 5th graders must face each year, teaching writing has become an awesome responsibility.
Our school is a Title One school with a high percentage of ESL students.
Our predominate culture is Hispanic. Composition and Grammar are especially difficult for our ESL students. Writing has become a main focus in fifth grade especially because of the impact it makes on the TCAP assessment scores. I am always trying to come up with new ways to introduce, engage, and encourage the students to write. Being able to communicate is fundamental to their success.
My Project
These writing folders have 4 pockets which will hold their weekly work which includes pre-writing, rough draft, edited and revised copies, as well as the final edition. The wall chart display will allow each student to move their individual pencil to each writing process on the chart. The heavy duty pencil sharpener will hold up to 75 students a day grinding away. No more sharpeners that sound like a dentist's drill or have to be popped on the top to make it stop.
Students need whatever tools we can give them to learn at an early age to be organized, creative, and better communicators.
By helping my students to stay organized with their writing, they can continue with this trait in other subjects as well.
