My students have had tremendous success learning through the arts. PS46k is an elementary school in the Brooklyn Navy Yard area. PS46 serves about 500 children with nearly 100% poverty levels. We were named one of New York's 100 most improved schools during the 2003/04 school year. Since I began my program of mathematics infused art instruction we have posted double digit gains in standardized mathematics test scores.
Last year our school won the top city wide "Golden Apple" Award for our all school effort in community beautification. Our winning effort was an integrated project with the arts at the center. Students researched their neighborhood, published literature about Fort Greene/The Brooklyn Navy Yard, enhanced the school garden and performed community service.
Our team of teachers wishes to continue developing our students' sense of self worth in their own community and in the larger world. This coming year we would like to expand our successful program to include puppet and clay animation.
This art medium would use my children's natural story telling and artistic abilities. We would write scripts (using our language skills and promoting ESL proficiency), build sets (using our math skills), create production teams (fostering cooperative skills), animate (using hands on arts experiences) and present our finished work. The animation experience would also help develop much needed critical thinking skills.
We have all the skills we need to produce animation. We have reached proficiency levels in using recyled materials in our art work. Our only stumbling block is the hardware and the technology!
To produce the animated films we would need animation software and a laptop computer.
Our claymation initiative ensures technology parity in the digital age. My students have very little access to digital image making in or out of school.
