Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ours is a Title I school that offers an innovative instructional model to prepare all students for college and the professional world. Students participate in rigorous project-based learning, build enduring relationships, and develop twenty-first century skills. Our students are prepared to enter post-secondary options of four-year universities, community colleges, or livable wage careers.

My class is part of a new pathway called Design and Sustainable Technology.

Students enrolled in the DST pathway are a mix of Juniors and Seniors, and there are around sixty-five students per cohort. They are passionate, creative and are very excited to start this new pathway with us.

The Pathway focuses on integrated projects that combine 3D design elements and processes with English and Social Studies, and Science. Our intent is to elevate sustainable and socially-minded projects.

I am looking for funds to purchase CNC Machines to be used with Fusion 360, a 3D modeling software. In the CNC unit, we will look at the birth of ADA, how "disaffordances" affect design choices, and how to be inclusive and universal with design choices. Students will first carve ADA-inspired foam blocks for printing posters, then will create inclusive design pieces.

My Project

In this third unit of the 3D design class, students will learn about the ADA, it’s importance and influence on design choices. Students will watch the documentary Crip Camp, analyze the history of exclusion in design, and create an interactive poster that responds to the user’s touch. The posters will have conductive ink on them and will be connected to computers: when the ink is touched information will appear on the screen. I’m hoping that these materials will help create these interactive posters so that students can combine their knowledge of soldering, circuitry, civics and coding.
