My Project

From the very first day of school, my students begin their journey toward becoming confident readers and storytellers, but they need meaningful practice beyond classroom instruction to truly master essential storytelling skills. While daily lessons provide a strong foundation, supplemental resources are critical for closing learning gaps and addressing skill deficiencies before they become long-term obstacles. Mentor texts, journals, and art supplies will give students structured opportunities to read, write, illustrate, and retell stories while reinforcing the skills they practice during literacy stations. As students bring their ideas to life through storytelling, they will strengthen comprehension, creativity, and written expression.

Using a variety of engaging resources helps students replace frustration with confidence as they experience success one lesson at a time.

Our first learning goal is for students to strengthen retelling, vocabulary, comprehension, and text analysis through daily, targeted practice with mentor texts during whole group and small group instruction. Students will expand their schema and deepen their understanding of story structure as they develop stronger storytelling skills. Our second learning goal is for students to close learning gaps by becoming independent storytellers who can identify key story elements, use text evidence, determine the main idea, and understand unfamiliar vocabulary. The journals and art supplies will encourage students to illustrate and write their own stories, providing the repetition, creativity, and reinforcement needed to master grade level standards.

Every child deserves the opportunity to experience success as a storyteller. Without enough opportunities to practice, learning gaps continue to grow, often leading to frustration, reduced confidence, and a reluctance to share ideas. Your generosity will provide the resources my students need to strengthen their storytelling skills, transform frustration into achievement, and develop a lifelong love of reading, writing, and storytelling using art.
