Inspiring Change Through Reading and Writing

Help me give my students a collection of books that focus on civil rights, social justice, and multiculturalism.

My Students

My second grade students are a beautifully diverse group of learners that are creative, driven, and curious about the world around them. They love reading and writing, and have shown a lot of interest in books that address civil rights and social justice. As we head into a unit centered around opinion writing, I want my students to know that their voices are heard and they have the power to make changes in the world.

My Project

We are working on a reading and opinion writing unit that I have adapted to focus on civil rights and social justice. This unit is giving students an opportunity to work directly with texts that center around topics they are passionate about and address historical events.

I want my students to know that they have the power to make a difference and address issues they see in the world, and I believe literature is a powerful tool in empowering them.

To fully immerse ourselves in a variety of texts that address these topics, I would love to have an abundance of picture books that we can read together as a class and that my students can read on their own. Since reading and writing is very connected in this unit, it is so important to me that each student can have at least one of our books with them during Writer's Workshop to help them with their opinion letters. This project would not only help grow my classroom library, but it would allow my students to explore a variety of books that explore different cultures and address equality.
