As a first year teacher, building a diverse classroom library has been one of my top priorities before the school year begins. It is my goal to ensure that every student in my class feels that their identity is represented in the classroom. I believe every student should see all aspects of their own identity, as well as identities different from their own, represented in the literature available to them. In my classroom library, I want each student to be able to choose books that make them feel seem and heard, and I also want them to be able to choose books that introduce them to a new culture or identity. Literature can be a powerful tool used to give them a sense of affirmation, to teach them about social issues, or to gain a better understanding of other cultures and identities.
