Help me give my students engaging and inspiring literature that is culturally relevant. These books, graphic novels, series books, and non-fiction books will inspire students to take their love for reading into the summer months.

My Students

We are curious, energetic, and ready to explore the world around us. As much as possible, we get outside, engage with the community and actively participate in our neighborhood.

We are a diverse community of learners with most students speaking at least two languages.

In addition, 96% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced priced lunch and 96% of the students are students of color.

We see our diversity as an asset and work hard every day to ensure that we are college and career ready. We know that to be informed and engaged citizens we must be critical thinkers and exposed to a variety of experiences, thoughts, and texts.

My Project

Students who don't see themselves reflected in books are less likely to see themselves as readers. In addition, many students lose a lot of the reading and academic gains they have made during the school year over the summer if they are not inspired to read.

These books will help ignite readers and give them series books that they can continue to enjoy over the summer months.

That way they will come back to school in the fall ready to keep soaring.

These books will also allow students to discuss books with other students. Research shows that students who talk about books with their peers are more likely to read on their own and develop an identity as a reader.
