The students in my 5th grade classes come from a variety of backgrounds and bring to my class a wealth of experience and cultural diversity. I have students from Mexico, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nigeria, Somalia, Nepal and Kenya. Many of my students identify as Latino, Native American, African or African American. They are energetic, curious, and well versed in the larger community. Ninety-eight percent of our students receive free and reduced lunch and most of the students speak more than one language. Around twenty percent of my students are homeless and highly mobile. With these challenges come many assets; resilience, motivation, and a drive to improve their lives. As a classroom community we refuse to look at things from a deficit perspective and strive to do our best against all odds every single day. Students' second and third languages are valued and used and their cultures are interwoven into our class.
