My students need binders in order to store, and track, their math and reading assessments throughout the year. By monitoring their academic progress, my students will have increased ownership over their learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is composed of about twenty students with diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Over fifty percent of my students are English Language Learners, and seventy-five percent receive free or reduced lunch. Many students enter my classroom reading several levels below grade-level and with limited vocabulary. Although many of my students are struggling academically, they enter my classroom eager and excited to learn.
Despite the many obstacles my students face, it is my duty as their teacher, to close their learning gaps so that they can be successful with the fourth grade curriculum.
My students are eager to succeed, but are not always aware of their own areas of weaknesses as learners. I am hoping to help them become more aware and accountable for their own learning, so that they can gain independence in the classroom.
My Project
Students in fourth grade are required to master a variety of concepts in the areas of literacy and numeracy. After teaching a new skill, I often administer a formative assessment to determine if my students have mastered the skill. These assessments are often 3-4 questions that allow students to show what they know about the current concept. These assessments are often used by me, the teacher, to make decisions about the next steps for instruction for each child.
As a classroom teacher, I believe that students should have a vital role in their own education.
If students become responsible for storing their own assessments, and graphing their progress in specific areas, students will have clear guidance on how to improve their own education. Students will use the three ring binders and sheet protectors to store each of the math and reading assessments that they take throughout the school year. The tab dividers will allow students to organize the assessments by content. Finally, the colored pencils will be used so that the students can graph the results of each assessment in order to see their progress. By making students aware of their own strengths and weaknesses as learners, they will also become more empowered to make better decisions about their learning. This will allow students to exercise greater independence in the classroom by letting them select learning centers and activities that will directly benefit them.
This will also allow me to have increased interaction and communication with my students. These binders will allow me to conduct student conferences, which will be a chance for students to analyze and reflect upon their progress throughout the year. By allowing students to track and engage with their own data, I expect to see increased motivation and progress in my fourth grade students.
