Students in fourth grade are required to master a variety of concepts in the areas of literacy and numeracy. After teaching a new skill, I often administer a formative assessment to determine if my students have mastered the skill. These assessments are often 3-4 questions that allow students to show what they know about the current concept. These assessments are often used by me, the teacher, to make decisions about the next steps for instruction for each child. As a classroom teacher, I believe that students should have a vital role in their own education. If students become responsible for storing their own assessments, and graphing their progress in specific areas, students will have clear guidance on how to improve their own education. Students will use the three ring binders and sheet protectors to store each of the math and reading assessments that they take throughout the school year. The tab dividers will allow students to organize the assessments by content. Finally, the colored pencils will be used so that the students can graph the results of each assessment in order to see their progress. By making students aware of their own strengths and weaknesses as learners, they will also become more empowered to make better decisions about their learning. This will allow students to exercise greater independence in the classroom by letting them select learning centers and activities that will directly benefit them. This will also allow me to have increased interaction and communication with my students. These binders will allow me to conduct student conferences, which will be a chance for students to analyze and reflect upon their progress throughout the year. By allowing students to track and engage with their own data, I expect to see increased motivation and progress in my fourth grade students.
