I have a classroom of 18 very active, inquisitive, wonderful kindergarten students in a small rural community in North Florida. My school is a Title 1 school with 100% of students receiving free breakfast and lunch. My students come from a variety of social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom, they come in with a smile on their faces, are hard working, eager to learn something new and full of questions every single day! They beam with excitement when they master a new skill. Their smiles and enthusiasm in learning are infectious. Each and every day they challenge me to find new ways to help them reach their full growth and potential. I am as eager to come to school as they are to see what each day holds.
My Project
My students love hands-on learning. It gives them the opportunity to explore, discover, discuss/ask/ answer questions and interact with other students. A science center will add wonderful lessons in exploration in many areas. The file folder games, science puzzles, science viewers and real bug discovery kit will help in the reinforcement of the standards and skills taught during science lessons in a fun and engaging way. Students will learn about earth, space, physical and life sciences and other important science concepts while using these materials.
Students that touch, explore and have fun while learning are more engaged, this is a proven technique that increases academic achievement.
The new Science Center would allow my students to apply knowledge they have learned during instructional time, it would be a positive addition to our classroom.
