My Students

The 5th-grade students at our school are curious, brilliant, and creative learners!

They take advantage of every opportunity given to them.

They love to use modern technological tools to explore ideas. Creative projects, especially those done in small groups, are some of their favorite learning experiences. (Of course, this year small groups may be trickier. I am creating this project with that in mind!)

They ask a lot of questions and learn best through the discovery of ideas. They need many opportunities to practice finding answers to questions, to make and learn from bold mistakes, and to collaborate in developing projects. These are the skills that will help them be successful in the future!

My Project

In our classroom students love to play board games! They enjoy the social and competitive challenges games present. They are engaged and drawn into the singular focus that board games provide. So, from their perspective, board gaming in the classroom is awesome!

The thing is, gaming together not only engages students socially in the challenge, it also provides excellent reading, math and problem solving opportunities!

Students engage in authentic and complex nonfiction reading as they scour the rulebooks for understanding. Most games provide unique mathematics discovery through probability prediction, spacial reasoning, and simple and complex calculations. In addition, these games all include content learning, giving students core knowledge about their world to consider as they play!
