My Project

For many years now, I have sponsored the Gender and Sexualities Alliance Club at my high school (called Caring Colors). This has served as a safe and fun space for young LGBTQIA+ students to gather, make friends, talk about their concerns, and advocate!

These items will help ensure that students in Caring Colors can connect with others, learn about LGBTQIA+ culture and history, and advocate for inclusivity at our school!

In Caring Colors Club, students learn to see the world through the eyes of others who are different from them. Students lead lessons in club about gender identity, sexuality, health, and mental health. It's a space for a diverse range of LGBTQIA+ students and allies! Students come from different backgrounds and perspectives and support one another, ensuring that anyone suffering from mental health needs or any needs whatsoever has a friend and ally. The club is a safe space and a space to plan advocacy. For example, for two years, students have advocated to expand access to gender neutral bathrooms for students.

The tools in this project will: 1. help students learn empathy, 2. teach students to be compassionate, 3. empower students to advocate in our school system, 4. build a safe space for diverse students through connection and fun, 5. express themselves at school and during events like our Homecoming parade, 6. raise awareness about the club and LGBTQIA+ rights.

Success will be measured by attendance of students at club meetings and advocacy events and by a survey taken of club students before and after the tools are received to determine their impact on student mental health, empathy, compassion, and advocacy skills.

These items will stay with the club sponsor long into the future to ensure that LGBTQIA+ students at Bowie High are supported and ready to learn!
