Inclusive Girls Soccer Team

Help me give my students soccer cleats for girls to feel confident and comfortable at practices and games. Cleats help build Middle Schoolers their athlete identity, and girls especially are more likely to play in High School.

My Project

Middle School is a hard place especially after the pandemic. A lot of students are more socially isolated and skip school.

Sports is a big motivator for kids to attend school.

I have seen that by being a part of a team, girls are motivated to do well academically while also developing social skills that are important in classroom settings. Girls become more confident, are able to communicate with teachers more effectively and share their goals for the future.

Having their own equipment to practice, will help girls feel more comfortable, allow them to play in games, and to keep playing soccer when they transition into High School. For soccer to become a part of a girls identity, having her own pair of cleats is essential.

A lot of girls on the team are new to the country and are still learning English. Currently I have a word of the day that is taught verbally. We also practice English in opening circle (beginning) and closing circle (end) of practice. Most girls are from different countries and backgrounds, soccer is a shared language to make friends from different backgrounds and celebrate differences on the team. All activities at practice have a lens to include a girl who has never stepped on a field and doesn't speak english, and the girl who has played for 3 years, and to bring them together to support each other. The games are fun, engaging and encouraging, and practicing English is always an objective. All I need is a donation of individual equipment, so girls can each have their own cleats regardless of family income or support.

I'm the coach for the RMS girls' team in Oakland, and am requesting support in purchasing cleats for my girls' soccer team.
