In Real Life, Part 2

Help me give my students new non-fiction books to help them gain a deeper understanding of the world.

My Students

Creating. Reading. Exploring. Collaborating. These are some of the activities I see our kids engage in every day as they come to the library.

The kids at my school come from diverse backgrounds, from kids who receive free and reduced-price lunches, to kids who have everything they desire, but no matter their background, the library is a place where they are welcome to come to explore.

They want to make a mark on the world. They want to explore and connect. They want to be able to express who they are. They want to find ways to expand their world through reading. They will be our future, and the library is the place they can begin their journey.

My Project

Our library was remodeled last year, and as we were putting everything back together, we realized our non-fiction section needed to be weeded. We had outdated materials that just had to go, we had books in bad condition, and books that were just not appropriate for our current time. Because we weeded so much, we need to rebuild our non-fiction collection to give kids access to what is happening "in real life."

Fiction is a great way to access the world and build empathy, but non-fiction is important for kids to have access to for research, knowledge building, and making connections to real events and people.

In non-fiction books, kids may connect to someone that will help them understand themselves or someone close to them in a deeper way. In non-fiction books, they may expand their knowledge base. In non-fiction books, they may find a passion they want to follow for the rest of their lives or expand one they already have. Fiction can do all of this as well, but sometimes knowing there is a real, live person experiencing the same as you can make all the difference.
