Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our parents send their very best students to our school. They are creative, resilient, resourceful, full of life and energy. Our students are on track for being our world leaders, doctors and lawyers, merchants, laborers and purveyors of the arts. They represent our society to come, and every day is an honor to work with them.
MLMS students are energetic, eager to learn and express themselves through the multifaceted subject of drama.
They reveal their hidden talents and abilities daily.
My Project
We have many ideas for upcoming skits: Jack and the Beanstalk, Signs, and some cultural skits. My students enjoy expressing their artistic creativity in the art room to add to the props, costumes and masks. These supplies are needed to accomplish dynamic, diverse and advanced creations as we explore character, stagecraft and performing. In class, we have experienced greater animation and energy while students don masks. They speak louder, move more and play freely.
The supplies are not something available at our site: round reed will create frameworks and bones; shop towels will give higher strength than paper; books will give us knowledge.
The Sargent Plastilina is oil based clay. This is useful in creating shapes for masks. We will create a mold of a face, then cover it with paper mache cloth. We will also use fabric cloth as available for additional strength.
The beauty of these supplies is that their creations (the ones that don't go home with the students) will supplement the drama department for years to come. The masks can be used to encourage student improvisation and be used in other skits and plays.
