My students were immediately curious and excited when they first caught a glimpse of our new skeleton. Even before we have officially begun using it for hands-on instruction, it has already sparked conversations and questions about the human body. Students have been able to see the skeleton up close and begin connecting what they see with the concepts we will be learning throughout our Human Body Systems unit.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to put this resource to work as we begin studying the skeletal system and the major systems of the human body. Students will be able to use the skeleton as a hands-on reference while identifying and locating bones, learning anatomical terminology, and exploring how the skeletal system works together with other body systems. Having a physical, full-sized model will give my students an opportunity to move beyond diagrams and pictures and actually interact with a three-dimensional representation of the human body. I am especially excited to see their reactions when they get to use the skeleton during our lessons and activities!\r\n\r\nYour support has helped make our Medical Science classroom more engaging and hands-on, while giving my students access to resources that help make medical concepts feel more real. Seeing the same types of equipment used by healthcare professionals has helped students make a tangible connection between what they are learning in class and what they may encounter in a real healthcare setting. Students are especially excited to eventually practice taking one another's vital signs and stepping into the role of a healthcare professional.\r\n\r\nThese resources will play an important role when we reach our First-Aid and CPR unit later this school year. Students will learn how healthcare providers assess a patient's condition by measuring vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation, and body temperature. They will have the opportunity to practice using the equipment, record and interpret their findings, and connect those observations to what they know about the human body. Having classroom equipment that students can actually handle and use will make these lessons much more interactive and authentic than simply learning about vital signs from a textbook or presentation.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building students' knowledge of the human body and healthcare practices before putting these tools into action. I can now take attendance, communicate with students and families, manage files, respond to emails, and access important instructional resources while remaining present and engaged with my students.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting ways my students benefit from the iPad is through interactive, teacher-paced lessons. I can use platforms such as Pear Deck to guide students through questions, activities, and checks for understanding while moving throughout the classroom and monitoring their progress in real time. Rather than standing at the front of the room behind a computer, I can circulate, interact with students, provide immediate support, and keep lessons moving. My students especially enjoy the increased interactivity and responsiveness of these lessons because they can actively participate rather than simply watch a presentation.\r\n\r\nThis technology has been particularly valuable for students who benefit from frequent teacher support and encouragement. Being able to walk around the classroom while still controlling the lesson allows me to check in with students who may need additional assistance without interrupting the learning of others. The iPad has essentially allowed me to be more present with my students while still maintaining control of the technology that supports their learning.
