Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a small city in Central Pennsylvania. This area is populated with economically disadvantaged families. Many of our students' resources are limited to what is available in the classroom.

Despite the many challenges my students face, they are resilient, persistent and incredibly hard working.

These children thrive on and appreciate hands-on and engaging activities. I am proud of the progress they have each made so far and know that this project will benefit each of them greatly!

My Project

Our students participate in a daily 30 minute period of independent reading. While the children are provided with age-appropriate books to read, 30 minutes can still be challenging for kindergarten students to stay engaged. These materials will improve reader engagement and ultimately help the students to become better readers.

Both the phonics phones and the flashlights will aid in improving reader engagement during this independent reading period, where students are building their reading stamina and beginning reading skills.

With the phonics phones students will be able to focus on pronunciation and the flashlights will boost reader engagement when students are permitted to read in the dark.
