Our students participate in a daily 30 minute period of independent reading. While the children are provided with age-appropriate books to read, 30 minutes can still be challenging for kindergarten students to stay engaged. These materials will improve reader engagement and ultimately help the students to become better readers. Both the phonics phones and the flashlights will aid in improving reader engagement during this independent reading period, where students are building their reading stamina and beginning reading skills. With the phonics phones students will be able to focus on pronunciation and the flashlights will boost reader engagement when students are permitted to read in the dark.
