Help me give my students a plastic film that will cover an inoperable sliding glass door, allowing for sunlight to enter but obscuring the students inside.

My Project

I teach on California's largest federally recognized Native American tribe's reservation. My school serves approximately 75% indigenous students. The campus is nestled amongst the redwoods where they meet the ocean and river. This school is so rich with culture, with traditional Yurok houses in the front, and a handmade dugout canoe as you enter the front doors. Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they thrive vary greatly. We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful for this new group of learners.

I teach reading using one specific curriculum but this project give me another option if and when that one doesn't work for some of my students.

Explode the Code Teaches Phonetics and Spelling. They combine visual learning with phonetic learning by associating a word with a picture. It's simply adding another tool to my belt.

Secondly and not any less important there is a sliding glass door that has been permanently sealed shut. It has curtains but when they are closed no light comes in. I want to be able allow sunlight in and not have an 8' wide window into my classroom. In the event of an emergency where the classroom needs to be concealed quickly this would help us remain safe.

The last couple of things are morning meeting wall décor and charts. These wall charts are what morning meetings go over such as date, time, weather, birthdays, and classroom jobs.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
