Remember the excitement you shared with family and friends when you watched Jeopardy on television and played along? Well, I'd love to give my students the opportunity to share the same experience. I teach sixth grade mathematics at a public charter school in Manhattan. The school is a public 5-8 charter school, and we are in our 4th year of existence. Last year, 80% of my 30 students achieved at or above grade level on the New York State English Language Arts test. More impressively, 100% of my students achieved at or above grade level on the statewide mathematics test. Nearly all of my current 72 students are African-American and from the Dominican Republic, where Spanish is their native language, and this composition is the same throughout the school.
This year, I have 72 students. About a quarter of my students receive services for either an IEP, speech or ESL. My students' level of readiness ranges greatly. We have discussions, and I find that the students, some of whom cannot decode words in mathematics problems, thrive in the discussions. Moreover, they do well very with games and group work. That is why I am requesting this Classroom Jeopardy set.
My students would need a Classroom Jeopardy console, 6 remotes (so that groups of 4 each could play), a link to create the games, and cartridges to store the games that I have created for them. This project will benefit my students because they love watching television and playing games, so this would be meeting the students with an interest of their own. When my students are interested, they spend so much more time on task, which is important to get them where they need to be. They can learn more content in all subjects because not only are they hearing or reading it, they are saying the answers and moving their bodies to play the game. This will help to increase the comprehension and retention of content that is covered in class. Moreover, they can play the game with students from the other sixth grade classes on Fridays. It will increase their ability to work well with others and to negotiate.
Your help will ensure that my students get to receive content in a way that I cannot provide. They will enjoy assessments and realize that it is not only about taking tests. They can check their own understanding and give themselves the power to take more control over their learning. You can make this happen, and my students will learn, raise their test scores, and become even better critical thinkers. They are super excited about this potential opportunity! Please give them this incredible this.
